From Lived Experience to Professional Practice – Expanding My Work to Support Adolescents with DBT-A
Why DBT-A?
DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) is a structured, skills-focused therapy that teaches people how to:
• Regulate intense emotions
• Cope with stress and distress
• Build better relationships
• Strengthen a sense of identity and purpose
DBT-A is specially adapted for adolescents and addresses many of the challenges young people commonly face, including:
• Identity confusion
• Emotional overwhelm
• Impulsivity or risk-taking behaviour
• Difficulties with relationships and family
• Crisis or high-risk situations
And importantly, DBT isn’t just about learning these skills — it’s about applying them in everyday life, with ongoing support.
